Saturday, 22nd November, 2014 at 7:30pm, St James' Church Muswell Hill, London N10

Introduction from Murray Hipkin, Musical Director. (Please note this concert has now taken place.)

Following our sell-out concert at Milton Court with Cantus Domus last July, I am delighted to invite you to our next concert back on home territory in Muswell Hill.

On Saturday 22nd November we will be performing Beethoven’s Mass In C with a quartet of splendid soloists and the Meridian Sinfonia. It was commissioned by Prince Nikolaus Esterházy II in 1807 who had previously commissioned a Mass from Haydn every year between 1795 and 1802. Unfortunately Beethoven’s offering, although it is closely modelled on Hadyn’s formulaic settings, did not meet with approval and later become overshadowed by his own Missa Solemnis of 1823. However, the Mass In C has been described as an under-rated masterpiece and I very much hope you will enjoy it. The soloists are soprano Mary Nelson, alto Kitty Whately, tenor Anthony Gregory and bass David Soar.

We will be opening the concert with a rarely performed but dramatic setting by Haydn of the Te Deum (No 2 in C). Comprising three short sections, this commission for the Empress Marie Thérèse to celebrate the arrival of Lord Nelson in Eisenstadt, dates from 1799. There are no soloists and the work is like a miniature concerto for chorus.

The third piece in the programme has been chosen in order to give someone who works tirelessly for the choir in rehearsals a well-deserved moment in the spotlight. As she begins her tenth season with us, I am delighted to say that our accompanist, Catherine Borner, will be performing Mozart’s Piano Concerto in A major, K488.
