Introduction from Murray Hipkin, Musical Director (Please note this concert has already taken place.)

Following our sell-out performance]] of Mozart's Mass in C minor and the world premiere of Matthew King's Out of the Depths I am writing to encourage you to book your tickets now for our spring concert on Saturday 20th April before it is too late. Tickets are selling fast!

I was appointed as Musical Director of NLC in January 2003 so this concert marks the tenth anniversary of my first performance with the choir. Looking back over the last decade I decided that it would be appropriate to mark the occasion with a repeat performance of one of my favourite choral works, last performed by NLC in 2006, Bach's Mass in B Minor.

One of the things I have introduced since I have been conducting the choir is the occasional performance with specialist players using period instruments - our performance in 2006 was the first of these occasions - and I am pleased to say that we will be accompanied by Baroque players from our regular orchestra, the Meridian Sinfonia.

It has long been my policy when booking soloists to look for emerging talent and give opportunities to young artists, as well as hire established names. The soloists this time are a very satisfying balance of two young singers at the start of their careers and two experienced singers, one of whom has appeared with the choir on a number of previous occasions.

Soprano Robyn Allegra Parton first appeared with NLC at the age of 14 in Bernstein's Chichester Psalms, and more recently in BrittenÂ’s Rejoice in the Lamb. Counter-tenor James Laing has recently appeared in principal roles with the Royal Opera, Opera North and English National Opera and is a much-sought after exponent of Baroque and contemporary music. Tenor Nick Pritchard has appeared with us on several occasions, most recently as soloist in HandelÂ’s Israel in Egypt. Bass Adrian Powter sings with North London Chorus for the first time, having appeared in English National Opera in Gounod's Faust and their recent Barber of Seville production.

I do hope that you will be able to join us and help celebrate my tenth anniversary with this amazing masterpiece.

With best wishes, and thank you for your continuing support.

Murray Hipkin

Musical Director - North London Chorus
